New Court Space Brings New Opportunities at the Complex

A new surface for indoor sport and recreation is available at the WM Sobey Indoor Sports Complex in Stellarton!

As a result of the closures and restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, many local sport organizations were left without a facility for training. The Board and staff of the Complex recognized this barrier for many indoor sports and began brainstorming how they could better accommodate a broader range of sport and recreation.

With the support of the provincial government, this pilot project began!

This removable flooring is safely able to remain in place on top of 1/3 of the existing turf in the facility. Its hard top makes it a great alternative to a gym flooring and can be used for sports like volleyball and basketball, to name a few.

“From a coaching perspective, this project allows us to offer a program of skill development when we thought we wouldn’t be able to have a season. The collaboration with the Complex has allowed players aged 12 to 17 to get back on the court,” said Tanya Antle, a coach of the Pictou County Invasion Volleyball Club. “It is really a privilege to have a dedicated and safe space for players and coaches to train and play that not many other clubs have in our province.”

The flooring is currently on rent from a facility in New Brunswick, but the hope of this project is to highlight the need for this type of surface in Pictou County.

To inquire about booking either court space or turf space, the public is asked to contact the Sports Complex. This can be done by calling 902-752-3793 or by emailing sobeyssoccer@gmail.com.

For the Complex, this project offers an opportunity to expand its offerings to the surrounding community. The potential it brings is very promising to Pictou County!
